Can you feel it? The weather is starting to get colder, the sun is starting to set at an earlier time. Winter is just around the corner and now is the best time to get ready for the colder months, when you roll out the fan heaters and bleed the radiators.
Below, we’ve listed our top four tips for winter electrical safety in Haywards Heath, or anywhere really. Whether it be at home or in the office, use these four pieces of advice to avoid fires or serious injury.
1. Check plugs and cables for signs of damage
Your electric blankets and heaters have been sat in the cupboard for the past 6 months. Before plugging it in, we strongly recommend quickly checking the plug and cable, especially if you have pets. They love to nibble on your cables!
2. Remember to turn your electric heaters off at the end of the day
Did you know that more house and office fires occur during the winter months, as opposed to the summer? One of the most common causes of this is due to electric radiators being covered or left unattended. We understand that the room will get cold if you turn off your heater while you break for lunch, but is it really worth the risk?
Make sure your heaters are switched off when you leave the room. When they’re switched on, make sure to keep them at least 3 metres away from materials that could catch fire easily, such as bedding, furniture or curtains.
3. Get your boiler serviced
There is no better time to make sure your boiler is in good working order than when you’re preparing for the winter months. We couldn’t imagine a worse scenario than being without central heating during a cold winter day, with no idea when the engineer is coming to repair it!
4. If you plug it in, it needs PAT testing!
Lastly, and most importantly: Don’t take risks! If you’re unsure about a piece of electrical equipment, get it PAT tested to give yourself peace of mind. If you are concerned about electrical safety in Haywards Heath, give us a call and book your PAT test before the weather gets cold and you find yourself really needing to use this equipment.
